Botox as a Treatment for Spasticity in Cerebral Palsy

Dr. Yasser Awaad focuses his research on movement disorders, especially as they impact pediatric patients. Dr. Yasser Awaad's research includes a study on Botox as therapy for pediatric patients with cerebral palsy.

People who live with cerebral palsy often experience spasticity, or muscle stiffness. Spasticity disrupts motor functions and can lead to problems walking, talking, eating, and performing other normal tasks.

Some patients who have mild spasticity benefit from oral medications that target muscles all over the body. Patients who have severe spasticity may benefit from targeted injections of a botulinum toxin, known commonly as Botox, which blocks signals between nerves and muscles, GIVES GREAT RELIEF IN THE affected muscles. This may alleviate pain and stiffness in patients with spasticity.

Though this treatment has been in use for 25 years, it has not yet been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. Botox treatment is still considered off-label use when applied to pediatric patients with cerebral palsy.
